What a 3PL Actually Takes Off Your Plate — and the Numbers That Prove It
What a 3PL Actually Takes Off Your Plate — and the Numbers That Prove It
If you cannot measure the change, you have not outsourced logistics — you have only moved the phone calls.
The work that disappears from your desk
Most import teams do not fail on any single shipment. They lose time to the coordination between the parts: the supplier, the carrier, the customs broker, the trucker, the warehouse and the finance team, each holding a different version of the truth. A third-party logistics partner takes over the joins:
- Origin coordination — booking, supplier documents, pre-shipment checks.
- Regulatory work — classification, ACI registration, permits, clearance, duty settlement.
- Physical flow — haulage, yard or warehouse storage, distribution to sites or customers.
- The paperwork trail — one file per shipment, ready for audit and for your accountant.
- Exception handling — the inspection, the missing certificate, the truck that did not show.
The five numbers to hold your provider to
- Landed cost per unit. Goods + freight + insurance + duty + VAT + handling + clearance + inland transport, divided by units received. This is the number your pricing depends on — not the freight rate.
- Port dwell time. Days between vessel arrival and the container leaving the terminal. This is where demurrage is born, and it is the cleanest measure of whether files are prepared in advance.
- On-time delivery. Percentage of shipments delivered by the promised date — measured against the date promised at booking, not a date revised afterwards.
- Lead-time variability. The spread, not the average. A predictable 40 days beats an average of 30 that swings between 20 and 55, because the spread is what your safety stock has to cover.
- Exception rate. Shipments needing unplanned intervention — a document fix, a reclassification, a re-inspection. A falling exception rate is what "we improved the process" actually looks like.
What to keep in-house
Outsource execution, keep the decisions. Supplier selection, pricing, what you buy and when, and the service promise you make to your own customers stay with you. A good provider gives you the data those decisions need; it does not make them for you.
How to start without betting the company
Take one lane or one product family, run it in parallel for a quarter, and compare the five numbers above against your own baseline. If the landed cost and the dwell time do not move, nothing has been outsourced but the phone calls.
Where Ranisy fits
We run freight, customs clearance, inland transport and storage as one file with one point of contact, and we report on those numbers rather than asking you to assemble them. Send us one month of your shipment history and we will show you where your landed cost and your dwell time are actually going.
